Running a taxi isn’t just about getting from A to B. It’s about managing fuel, maintenance, and taxi insurance costs while staying competitive. That’s why the reopening of the
Electric Vehicle Grant Scheme is welcome news for drivers across Ireland. The scheme makes the transition to a cleaner vehicle more realistic for everyday taxi drivers who need to balance long-term savings with upfront investment.

What’s the EV Grant Scheme All About?

The Electric SPSV (Small Public Service Vehicle) Grant Scheme, administered by the National Transport Authority (NTA) helps professional drivers switch to electric vehicles (EVs). With the cost of living and fuel rising, support like this could be the push many drivers need to make a move they’ve already been considering.

Grants of up to €10,000 are available for eligible drivers purchasing a new EV, with additional support for wheelchair-accessible vehicles. These incentives help level the playing field for drivers who want to modernise their vehicles but can’t absorb the full cost alone.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify, you must:

  • Hold a valid SPSV licence (taxi, hackney or limousine
  • Be upgrading to a new, fully electric vehicle
  • Apply through the NTA’s online system before the deadline or funding cap is reached

Both individual drivers and fleet operators are eligible, and the scheme is open nationwide. Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, so the sooner you apply, the better your chances.

Why Go Electric?

Switching to an electric taxi offers multiple benefits:

  • Lower fuel and maintenance costs
  • Access to grant funding and possible VRT relief
  • Improved taxi insurance rates - many insurers, including us, reward EV owners for safer, cleaner driving
  • Future-proofing your business against emissions restrictions

Beyond the cost savings, EVs also tend to offer a smoother driving experience, which can make long shifts behind the wheel a bit easier on you and more comfortable for your passengers.

Act Fast - Limited Funding Available

Like most grant schemes, this one won’t stay open forever. Funding is limited, and applications are already being processed. Acting now not only saves you money, but it puts you ahead of coming changes in regulation and customer expectations around sustainability.
